Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?

Casey Dental is pleased to offer the GBT system for hygiene patients.

GBT is the next step in the evolution of dental hygiene. It is a hygiene system that removes biofilm which covers all tooth surfaces and harbors bacteria that can cause inflammation of the gums and tooth decay. It is a minimally invasive system that can reduce or eliminate the use of hard instruments that can damage the integrity of the tooth.

Traditional methods of hygiene use manual instruments such as hand scalers and electronic instruments such as ultrasonics to remove plaque and calculus. The GBT system uses Airflow technology to clean teeth and gums without direct contact, resulting in a safe and very gentle hygiene experience.

What to Expect

  • Your hygienist will ask you to rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce the bacterial load, and to minimize aerosol spray. A soft retracting device will be inserted between your lips and your teeth to give the hygienist easier access to your teeth and gums.
  • The hygienist will apply the EMS Biofilm Discloser solution which dyes the plaque making it easier to locate and remove.
  • You will view photos of your mouth pre and post cleaning
  • The Airflow Max handpiece will be used to remove plaque, debris and biofilm. It is so gentle that it can be used on braces, implants and restorations. It can reach below the gumline and into deep grooves without damaging the natural teeth or soft tissues.
  • The Perioflow handpiece can be used to remove plaque from pockets as deep as 9mm. It is also minimally invasive unlike hand held scaling instruments.
  • The remaining calculus in pockets deeper than 10mm and 3mm below implants will be removed using the Piezon ultrasonic. It removes 95% of biofilm above and below the gumline, and it is also a gentle tool that eliminates the need for harder instruments.
  • A final evaluation will now be done to make sure all calculus has been removed, and fluoride will be applied. The earlier steps clean and polish at the same time.
  • Your risk assessment will be discussed and follow-up appointments scheduled.
